A copy of the weekly newspaper An Claídheamh Soluis published on 13 January 1900. The front-page details Cúrsaidhe an tSaogháil (Events of the World). This was an Irish Nationalist newspaper published by the organisation Conradh na Gaeilge (the Gaelic League). The aim of the organisation was to encourage the use of the Irish language in everyday culture. The League was founded in 1893 and the paper was first published in March 1899. Patrick Pearse became editor in 1903. The name An Claídheamh Soluis comes from the ‘Sword of Light’ of Irish mythology.
