This stamp is one of a set of two issued in 1956 to commemorate Commodore John Barry (March 25 1745-September 13 1803). Barry was born in Tacumshane, Co. Wexford. He began his career as an officer in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War and later joined the United States Navy.

He has been credited as the ‘Father of the American Navy. He became the first commissioned U.S naval officer at Commodore rank. He received this commission from President George Washington in 1797. The stamp is a mauve with a value of 3p and issued on September 11 1956.
