Inscribed ‘Thomas MacDonagh 190Signed Thomas MacDonagh, 1905, this may have been a school text book or a favourite author. In 1905 MacDonagh had moved from his teaching post at St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny to St Colman’s College, Fermoy where he established himself as a published poet.

Paul-Marie Verlaine (1844-1896) was a French poet associated with the late-19th century Symbolist and Decadent art and literary movements. Verlaine is a representative of the fin-de-siècle in French poetry. 5’
