About this item

The ‘Maid of Erin’ harp emblem is a personification of Ireland. The symbol was used on the flags of the 1878 rebellion, which inspired the 1916 Rising.

This wooden harp was presented by Douglas Hyde in 1915 at a meeting of the Gaelic League as a suggested emblem for the future ‘Conradh na Gaeilge’. The harp emblem was not adopted by the organisation.
