Story about this item

In 1966, as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Easter Rising, a branch library – dedicated to Thomas MacDonagh – was opened in Cloughjordan. Mrs Barbara Redmond, his daughter, formally opened the library.

In her address, she said: “Thomas MacDonagh never thought in terms of flags or victories in the field of arms and glory. His were the victories of intelligence, the open mind, the educated community, with the poor man’s child an equal sharer in the benefits that flow from an educated mind.” The legacy of MacDonagh continues to be honoured through the presence of the library in Cloughjordan.

Moira Sheppard was appointed librarian in 1966. Her dedicated service was followed by Martina Naughnane, and then Mrs Marie Brady, who served as librarian from 1988 until her retirement in 2021.  The Library was closed from March 2020 until May 2023, due to Covid and the recruitment of a new librarian.

The Golden Jubilee in1966 was a huge occasion in Cloughjordan, given that Thomas MacDonagh played such  a key role in the Easter Rising.  Also on this day,  the official opening of MacDonagh Park took place, the home of Cloughjordan’s Kilruane MacDonaghs GAA club.

On May 3rd, 2013, the anniversary of the execution of Thomas MacDonagh, the new Library and Heritage Centre was officially opened in Cloughjordan by Minister Jimmy Deenihan amid a weekend of local celebrations
