Losing Art Skills

Story about this item

I was given this tree bark painting 20 years ago by my wife’s brother-in-law and it travels with me wherever I go. It originates from Orissa state in NE India where tribal communities have held on to these skills for generations. This type of Indian craftwork is an old skill that is sadly becoming lost. The tree bark is harvested, cut into equal pieces and then stitched together. Then the artwork is made using a leaf stem as a very fine paintbrush, and vegetable ink to paint. The artwork symbolises harvest, home, farm, tools.
