Autumn Arts at the Museum – Harbour Grace: Music and Video Performance with Andy Spearpoint

EVENTS

Harbour Grace is a thirty minute piece of music with video that Andy made over the summer. He has recently completed an MA in Composition and Creative Music Practice at UL and it was his final performance piece.
Harbour Grace is an attempt to musically process experiences of attrition and loss. The sense of destruction and redemption as being things that come from on high has been a common thread in the various ideas that he has engaged with. The three parts of the piece variously reference the gradual collapse of a barn in his garden, the bombing of German cities in WW2 and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart.
It’s performed on a pair of samplers along with live saxophone and vocals and accompanied by a video edited from a 1940’s Boeing pilot’s training film on cloud formation. The samplers are
manipulating and sequencing various pieces of audio including sounds of pieces of tin from Andy’s barn, morse code, gongs, a Japanese monastery, birdsong and recordings of RAF bomber crews over Berlin. It tends to the hypnotic rather than the frenetic!
The performance will be around thirty minutes and he’ll give a short presentation afterwards on the process, ideas and technology involved.

Commences 7.30pm. Admission is free.
